37 year old Omar Higgins died 18th April, 2019 after he was hospitalized since suffering a stroke early this April.

Higgins, before his death, was hospitalized roughly two weeks ago. He remained in the ICU after being diagnosed with both a mini-stroke and a staph infection.

Negro Terror Omar Higgins cause of death started after earlier this month, Higgins was admitted to downtown’s Methodist Hospital where he was diagnosed with a small stroke and a staph infection, and issues relating to his kidneys.

Friends and fans had quickly rallied around Higgins, set up a GoFundMe page and was able to raise over $20,000 which was put towards tdefraying his medical costs. A benefit concert for Higgins at Midtown’s Growlers in late-May was also announced.

Higgins founded the hardcore punk band Negro Terror. The Memphis musician, bassist and leader of reggae band Chinese Connection Dub Embassy was a beloved figure in the local music community, both for his work onstage and off.

In addition to his bands, Higgins was also a church youth leader and praise tam music director, a musical ambassador for Le Bonheur, and an activist on the front lines of anti-racist and anti-fascist efforts in Memphis.

Negro Terror’s official Facebook page confirmed his death with a statement from the Higgins that read:

“It saddens us to announce that Omar passed away this past Thursday. Omar fought so hard and never gave up hope as so many friends and family prayed and came to visit him almost every day he was in the hospital.

Omar loved so many people from all walks of life and he made sure to always help anyone that came to him in need of advice and would do anything that would bring peace.

Omar wanted to continue to do what he loved and was healing others through music and conversation. If you or anyone you care about ever needs help, please fight with every muscle in your body to help them with every ounce of love you can summon.

“We love all of you so much as does Omar – let us continue to keep his memory alive and cemented in the history books of Memphis Music.”
