The England men’s national team played out a very Three Lions performance on Saturday and once again suggested that the World Cup next year could be a real slog.
Joe Hart was castigated by many and it was left to new captain Harry Kane to make it 2-2 against Scotland in World Cup qualifying after Leight Griffiths turned the game around in the final three minutes.
Looking further afield though, England’s youth sides have undoubtedly shown this weekend, that there is plenty of talent coming through.
On Saturday, England won the Toulon Tournament on penalties.
Venezuela’s incredible run to the final
There was much more interest in England’s Under-20 side, led by new Liverpool signing Dominic Solanke and with a smattering of key Everton players.
After a brilliant run to the Under-20 World Cup final, England took on Venezuela, a country in dire straits right now.
Venezuela’s incredible run to the final, considering their troubles back home, was an excellent story on its own.
But, from an English perspective it was all about whether England had the nerve and class to win their first World Cup final since 1966.
Ultimately, England’s match against Venezuela was a ding dong battle of the highest order.
