The third police officer linked to Nathaniel Julies’ murder has appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrates Court.
The detective from the Crime Prevention Unit in Eldorado Park, Voster Netshiongolo who made a brief appearance on Thursday morning is expected to remain in custody with the other two suspects until September 10.
During the court hearing, advocate Abre Loubser called the court’s attention to the fact that the charges presented before the court were different from the charges the police station arrested him for.
Netshiongolo was arrested on Tuesday by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
At that time, IPID said he was charged with defeating the ends of justice and being in possession of prohibited ammunition.
On Thursday morning, Ipid spokesperson, Ndileka Cola explained that the charges were revised.
“It means that the sergeant [Netshiongolo] allegedly unlawfully and intentionally after the murder of the child, assisted the accused two other police officers to escape liability or evade justice.”
After his court appearance, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane explained to the media that it was “within their rights to amend charges if an accused person has not yet pleaded guilty”.
He will join the other two accused in the dock next week.
