Video: Tygerberg racetrack on fire as protests continues

On Saturday morning, residents set a community racetrack in Tygerberg on fire.

This was during a protest against the eviction exercise.

The protest started after law enforcement officers allegedly tore down illegally-built structures in Bloekombos.

The structures were erected on privately-owned land in Bloekombos.

According to the Law enforcement spokesman, Wayne Dyason said officers “came under heavy attack”.

“Law enforcement came under heavy attack from protesters, numbering around 2,000. Protesters moved from Marula Road, but officers removed them from the area. Protesters also set fire to the Tygerberg racetrack and removed the zinc roof.”

Protests flared up in Kraaifontein after the eviction of illegal structures began.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed that police officers were on site, to assist with the execution of an eviction notice.

“Our members have been deployed to Bloekombos in Kraaifontein this morning to maintain law and order during the execution of an eviction notice by the sheriff of the court,” said Traut on Saturday.

The community began protest action against the evictions and later turned out to be riotous.

“The local community became riotous and the situation is currently being policed. No one has been arrested as yet. Our forces will remain in the area until tranquility has been restored,” said Traut.

City of Cape Town Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith confirmed anti-land occupation activities were taking place in the area.
