The National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, has faulted the report by the Ondo State Police Command over the cause of Saturday’s explosion in the state that injured many and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
Adie Udie, the Police Commissioner, had disclosed in a statement that the explosion which injured no fewer than 13 persons and destroyed over 70 houses was caused by explosives meant for a quarry company in Edo state.
He also added that the vehicle conveying the explosives had developed mechanical problems before they exploded at about 1am on Saturday opposite a church and school buildings.
However, the agency in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dr. Felix Ale on Sunday, faulted the Police boss over the cause of the explosion which made a crater on the Akure-Owo highway.
Ale, said: “The explosion could be a natural phenomenon of a suspected fall of a meteor from an asteroid belt on great speed from space.
“The global space community has a catalogue of a near-earth object that is potentially hazardous to humanity and they are constantly being monitored by organisations such as the National Space Research and Development Agency across the globe.
“Some of these natural occurrences may once in a while, escape observation and occur naturally as it is likely the case in the Akure explosion,” he added.
