The department of health has recruited 2,369 medical interns.
This followed the controversial deployment of over 200 Cuban doctors.
This is the biggest medical intern allocation programme in the department’s history.
The department made this announcement on Friday, 21 August 2020 and added that 41 foreign-trained medical interns who passed their exams were part of this program.
The Health minister Zweli Mkhize expressed his delight in the success of the program and also made it known that human resources were key for the success of the sector.
“Human resources for health is the first pillar of the Presidential Health Compact.”
Mkhize further explained that without effective doctors, there will be no health system.
He added that he was proud of the department’s achievement which targets the growth of the South African medical fraternity.
“Having met some of these bright young colleagues, I am always left inspired by their passion, enthusiasm and willingness to contribute not only to the fight against COVID-19 but also the attainment of Universal Health Coverage”, the minister said.
