Barcelona showed no signs of being slowed down by Luis Enrique’s confirmation that he
would step down at the end of the season, as they thrashed Celta Vigo 5-0 at the Camp Nou on Saturday night.
The Catalans put on a fine display in the first half, scoring two brilliant goals through Leo
Messi and Neymar.
Messi’s opener caused plenty of chatter on social media and not just because it was a classic Messi goal.
A classic Leo Messi goal The Argentine superstar picked the ball up from Sergio Busquets, made space for himself with a couple of lightning quick movements and curled into the corner.
It was a classic goal again from Messi. You have seen it before. But that doesn’t make it any less awesome.
So, who was Messi referring to with the celebration?
Perhaps Jorge Sampaoli – one of the favourites for the Barcelona job?
Or, maybe it was a reference to the ongoing contract negotiations with Barcelona?
The explanation is a lot more simple. Messi was gesturing to his nephew. Messi’s brother Rodrigo was at the Camp Nou with his children and the nephew had
been calling Leo without success for a couple of days in the lead up to the game.
“Simply a great”
Barcelona were inundated with requests about the Messi celebration during the
game and have put this message out to the Spanish media.
At the time of posting this article, Leo Messi himself has not updated any of his social media accounts with an explanation.
Rodrigo Messi has posted the celebration on his Instagram page with the following message: “Simply a great” with two
clapping emojis.
