Four railway infrastructure thieves nabbed by the police

Four railway thieves have been apprehended by the Police in Mpumalanga and Pretoria.

The police released in a statement on Monday that in a joint operation targeted to address theft and damages of critical infrastructure in the rail environment a 38yr-old man in Hercules, Pretoria was arrested on Friday.

The operation was carried out by the SAPS, the passenger rail agency, Telkom and Tshwane metro police officials.

He has been charged with copper theft and tampering with essential infrastructure.

In Mpumlanga, three men were nabbed by the police while transporting railway infrastructure which worth over R1 million.

One of the three arrested is an employee at a scrap metal business.

They were arrested last week after police officers along with Transnet officials, staked out the business in Kromdraai.

They saw the three men loading their trucks with stripped railway tracks.

One of the suspects tried escaping in a van which crashed into a wall.

He was able to escape from the scene but he was later tracked by the police and arrested on Saturday.

The trio were arrested in connection with the theft of rail infrastructure valued at over R1 million.
