Bayern players celebrate their massive win against Arsenal
Arsenal have been knocked out of the Champions League after a 10-2 aggregate loss to German champions FC Bayern Munich
in a dramatic fashion.
Theo Walcott gave the Gunners an early lead on the night and could have further reduced the aggregate deficit with better finishing in front of goal. The game turned after the break when Laurent Koscielny was sent off
for a push on Robert Lewandowski.
The Pole scored the subsequent penalty before Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal piled on the misery once again.
The elimination is the seventh consecutive at the last-16 stage for the Gunners, having last
reached the quarter-finals in 2009-10 where they were knocked out by a Lionel
Messi-inspired Barcelona.
The 5-1 first-leg loss three weeks ago mounted further pressure on Arsene Wenger amid speculation over a possible contract extension, with fans protesting over the Frenchman’s continued tenure
ahead of kick-off on Tuesday.
Elsewhere at San Paolo, Sergio Ramos scored two headers as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Napoli 3-1 and seal their place in the quarter-finals. Zinedine
Zidane’s side won 6-2 on aggregate after surviving a scare when the in-form Dries Mertens gave the home side the lead.
Belgian Mertens went agonizingly close to grabbing a second when he hit the post while Cristiano Ronaldo also hit the woodwork. The reigning European champions rallied in the second half and
scored two goals in six minutes through their captain Ramos, both from corners.
Despite Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema having an off night, the Spanish side sealed the tie when substitute Alvaro
Morata netted in stoppage time to continue their quest to retain the trophy.
Meanwhile, captain Ramos rescued his side when they were 1-0 down with two trademark headers which deflated the hosts
and their fans
