For the 2016 edition of the Ballon d’Or, France Football have emphatically taken their world player of the year trophy back from FIFA.
In recent years, FIFA and France Football shared the Ballon d’Or, and awarded it to the best player in the world at a gala ceremony in Zurich every January.
Seemingly unhappy with their end of the bargain, France Football took back the Ballon d’Or and on Tuesday announced when the trophy will be handed out.
For their part, FIFA will also award the best player of 2016 and the Puskas Award amongst other prizes, in a gala ceremony in January 2017.
When will the 2016 Ballon d’Or be announced?
The 2016 Ballon d’Or winner will be announced at 8pm CET on Monday December 12, 2016.
After a vote by 173 journalists worldwide, the winner will be announced simultaneously by France Football and L’Equipe.
A gradual revelation of the rankings will be revealed by France Football from 17:30 CET.
They will also detail the votes by country for each player.
Cristiano Ronaldo will almost certainly win the 2016 Ballon d’Or. Having won Euro 2016 and the Champions League in the past calendar year.
