While answering questions from newsmen following the swearing-in of Batch A Stream 1 of the 2017 orientation programme, the
Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, opened on the increase in the allowance of Corps members.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier Sulaiman
Zakari Kazaure, has made it clear that any increase in the allowance of Corps members will be determined by the introduction of a new minimum wage for workers.
Kazaure stated this in Minna, the Niger State capital, while answering questions from
newsmen on Thursday, following the swearing-in of Batch A Stream 1 of the 2017 orientation programme.
“The NYSC allowance is determined by the national minimum wage. We are waiting on the government to take a decision on the new wage structure before we know what
to do,” he said.
He said the scheme was aware that the allowance received by corps members was small, especially with the current economic downturn in the country.

Kazaure explained that that was why state governments were urged to augment the
stipend with N5,000 monthly for each youth corps member.
