Jose Mourinho has fired a warning to his rival managers, and claimed the clubs who didn’t win anything last season have something to prove – and need to do better
He did manage to throw a kind word in the direction of Arsene Wenger and also Antonio Conte, who may have won the Premier League last term, but who is having a terrible transfer window, and according to some reports, is considering walking out on his job.
Mourinho was up to his old tricks, and said after Man United’s pre-season win: “I think after the champions, Chelsea, I think Manchester United is the second most successful club last season and Arsenal the third. For me that’s absolutely clear.
“To finish second, third or fourth is like being first, second and third of the last because there is only one winner.
‘”Arsenal won a competition, we won two-and-a-half, I like to say.
“If someone had to prove something this season it is the ones that won nothing, so they have to improve to win something.”
Trophies
United have so far been decent in the transfer market, and with more players thought to be arriving, Mourinho’s words about being successful in Europe won’t have much sway with the board should they fail to break into the top four and not do better in the Premier League next season.
That will be vital for United, and while putting pressure on the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola may work for now, all eyes will be on Mourinho and United should their start to the season be anything less than brilliant.
