Getting naked during s₤xual relationship is not a new thing. Everyone automatically removes their clothes during intercourse.
But ever heard of making out wearing underwear? Not really! The people of an island off the coast of Ireland, wear their underwear during s₤x because they are so s₤xually repressed.
The people of Inis Beag, an island off the coast of Ireland, are so s₤xually repressed that they keep their underwear on even during s₤xual intercourse.
Even as things are slowly changing with time, here people believe that having s₤x with underpants on makes it more s₤xual and passionate.
The people of Inis Beag, however, are still steadfastly held in that culture of repressive sexuality in the eighties, just after a time of sexual revolution in the United States,’ when anthropologist John C Miller did his research. Inis Beag is an isolated Irish Catholic community on an island just of the coast of Connemara, Ireland.
They still speak their indigenous language of Gaelic and support a population of a little over three hundred people (about 350) through fishing and subsistence farming.
In InisBeag, s₤uality is viewed as harmful and shameful so the children are covered from a young age, change in secret or beneath their covers, and their parents only clean the exposed parts of their arms legs and faces.
The expression of love between parents and children involves no physical contact because its views as too s₤xual— it’s solely through verbal declarations. Similarly, breastfeeding is rare, if not taboo in the community.
Children are not permitted to see people naked, for any reason. There is no formalized s₤xual education on Inis Beag. Education of children on s₤xual matters is unheard of in Inis Beag.
In fact, anything that could be considered a s₤xual act— opposite sexes playing or fraternizing together, masturbating, and mutual exploration of bodies— as well as just discussing s₤xual acts is severely punished. And while boys seemed to learn from watching animals and sometimes from older me in the community, girls had no one to teach them.
In fact, because their mothers had no way to explain anything to them (because no one ever explained it to them) girls often feared that they were dying upon the discovery of their first menstruation.
Menopause itself was believed to cause hysteria and madness in women, and many women withdrew from society as theirs began. Marriages themselves are arranged by the parents, children only having a say in it if they are one of the few who are pregnant due to premarital s₤x and are therefore given the choice between marriage or being cast out of the community.
The average age for marriage was mid-thirties for men and mid-twenties for women. If women are taught one thing on s₤x it’s that pleasing their husband, by having s₤x with him, is their duty as wives.
The s₤x itself consists of little more than rough fondling of the buttocks and s₤x in the missionary position. There is no concept of s₤xual pleasure, foreplay, or the female orgasm because all of it is considered to be too sinful.
Men typically performed underwhelmingly, and sometimes painfully, as s₤xual partners and usually went to sleep immediately after s₤x.
Researchers suspect, that this repressive atmosphere directly correlates to the high number of alcohol drinking and alcohol-related incidences.
It is important to look at societies such as Inis Beag when discussing and comparing sexuality in different cultures.
