There are many celebrations and festivals amidst music, dance, and vibrant parades with fireworks the globe over. The majority celebrates 1st January as New Year’s Day, consistent with the New Style calendar, but in Zanzibar, they celebrate the Persian twelvemonth, Nayrouz. The Persian year celebrations are rooted within the Zoatrian religion, a faith older than Islam.
The Shirazis were historically the primary non-African settlers in Zanzibar, and they assimilated their culture into that of Zanzibar. The Nayrouz is understood in Swahili as Mwaka Kogwa, which accurately translates to “washing of the year” and it’s celebrated from July 23rd or 24th to August. The celebration lasts about four days and it’s celebrated in most parts of Zanzibar.
The Zanzibaris go all out for this festival on the island, but the epicenter of the celebrations is within the village of Makunduchi, in southern Unguja. many of us flock in from everywhere Tanzania to witness these incredible festivities where men whip one another with banana stalks and deemed as a purification ritual to finish all grudges with the opposite person because the twelvemonth is ushered in.
They perform specific rituals to herald good luck from the approaching year amidst merrymaking, singing, dancing, and feasting that are performed. On a primary day, the play fight ceremony takes place in Kae Kuu, an outsized open space within the center of town where the boys may vent their anger from the previous year.
Previously, actual weapons like sticks were employed in the play fight, but the people found it violent and opted for a less violent option, banana leaves. For a winner to be declared the opponent must raise both arms to point their willingness to surrender.
