A Turkish sunnet festival centers around the circumcision of a boy; the ceremony signals his transition into adulthood. The procedure is that the highlight of the celebration, which takes place at the boy’s home, during a banquet hall, or maybe in an exceeding restaurant.
Sunnet carries deep religious connotations for followers of Islam. Much is created of the circumcision (or sünnet) in Turkey, a ritual that a lot of belief marks the primary step of a boy becoming a person. Photographer Bradley Secker has gained access to Istanbul’s Circumcision Palace, which claims to possess performed over 100,000 operations since it opened in 1976.
The boys dress up in traditional costumes, complete with a beaded crown and white satin cape, harking back to the empire. they’re sultans for the day. The boys in today’s group are seven- to eight-years-old. Dr. Özkan says many families wait until this age so “parents can tell their sons what’s happening”.
After the operation, the boys return to the floor to celebrate and dance with their parents gingerly. Increasingly private hospitals in Turkey are encouraging families to hold out the operation during the primary few months of their child’s life in order that they haven’t any memory of it in any respect.
Of course, they will still have the party later. After the circumcision, the boy is laid on a decorated bed to recover and rest. Tables are set with an expansive feast, and after the guests have eaten, they offer the boy gifts like sweets and clothing.
Coins or a wristwatch are appropriate gifts, counting on the giver’s relationship with the boy, and guests whose hands the boy kissed during his visit before the ceremony give gold. Guests recite verses from the Koran and luxury the boy by reminding him that soon he will feel better. Music and other entertainment keep the boy’s mind off his pain.
