In 2020, the “Benadryl Challenge” went viral on TikTok, with teenagers uploading videos in which they attempted to induce hallucinations by taking excessive amounts of the over-the-counter antihistamine diphenhydramine.

Diphenhydramine is a medication that is both safe and effective for treating hay fever, upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold.

However, as the FDA warns, higher doses can cause serious health problems such as seizures, coma, or death. The maximum daily dose for children aged 6 to 12 is six tablets; for adults and children over the age of 12, the dose is twelve tablets.
