Eric Jean Baptiste, who owned a lottery business, and his bodyguard were killed in Laboule 12, a hilly area of Port-au-Prince with lots of trees, when their car was shot at. Jean Baptiste, who is 52 years old, was the leader of the center-left Assembly of Progressive National Democrats Party and ran for president of Haiti.

A party official named Ricardo Nordain said that when Jean Baptiste's armored car was ambushed, it flipped over.

“He stood for a lot,” said Nordain. “The fact that he was killed shows that this country is not led well.”

Haiti has had gangs for a long time, but their power has grown in recent years as democratic institutions and safety have gotten worse as a whole. This month, UN agencies said that gang violence in the capital has forced 96,000 people to leave their homes and that gangs have used rape to scare the local people.

Not too far away is the upscale Pèlerin 5 neighborhood, where former president Jovenel Mose was killed in his home in the middle of the night on July 7, 2021, and where the head of the Port-au-Prince Bar Association, Monferrier Dorval, was killed in his driveway by unknown attackers on August 28, 2020. In both cases, no one knows who did the killings.

Since Mose was killed, political paralysis, violence, and, most recently, civil unrest have been getting worse in Haiti. Varreux, the country's main oil terminal, is being blocked by gangs for the eighth week. This is causing food, fuel, and water shortages in the middle of a new cholera outbreak. On Friday, the UN said that cholera had spread to most of the country's departments. The world body also said that gang violence in Haiti has forced almost 100,000 people to leave their homes, with most of them setting up dirty camps on empty lots and in public squares.
