Premier League giants Manchester United have this afternoon confirmed that Michael Carrick will take on the captain’s armband at the club for the upcoming season.
Replacement
Following the departure of former skipper Wayne Rooney for Everton over the weekend, Jose Mourinho and co. were forced to consider all options regarding who would take over the role moving forward.
The likes of Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera had been touted as strong possibilities, but the Old Trafford club have opted for experience over all else with their decision.
Veteran
Michael Carrick has been at Manchester United for 11 years now, having arrived from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hostpur in 2006.
He has gone on to make over 300 Premier League appearances during that time, cementing himself as a favourite with both fans and teammates due to his calm demeanour and leadership qualities.
Traits such as these no doubt played a crucial role in the eventual decision of United boss Mourinho in naming Carrick as the club’s new captain, despite the fact that he will not be expected to start the majority of his side’s matches next season and beyond.
Official
Manchester United made the announcement official this evening on both their official website, and the club’s social media channels
