Ebonyi state Governor, David Umahi, has sacked over 1,000 aides from 350 local government area liaison offices and development centres management committee in the state.
In a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this was disclosed by Governor Umahi on Monday, July 20, during a virtual swearing-in of some special assistants and caretaker chairmen of local governments.
The categories of sacked aides include technical assistants, senior technical assistants, and executive assistants.
According to Umahi, the aides of the Ebonyi state government were relieved of their jobs over non-performance and would take effect on August 1, 2020.
He said: “We have over 1,000 of you, over 350 LGA liaison officers and several development centres management committee members, yet myself and my deputy threw ourselves ‘in the ring’ on the COVID-19 issue. I don’t know where else you will get a position, where you will just sleep and wait for bank alert.”
The Ebonyi state governor went on to note that any of the affected aides can reapply only if they are endorsed by the ministry or department of a state government.
This is coming after Governor Umahi suspended the state auditor general, Innocent Nweda, indefinitely with immediate effect.
He also suspended the auditor general for local government in the state, George Ukpai. The secretary to the state government, Kenneth Ugbala, announced this on Monday, July 13, in a statement in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The statement said their suspension was as a result of their failure to perform duties of their offices.
