ANDY MURRAY has been given a leg up to world No 1 by Milos Raonic.
Murray will be top of the rankings on Monday after Raonic withdrew from their Paris Masters semi final with a thigh injury.
The Scot thought he would need to beat the Canadian in order to depose Novak Djokovic.
But after years of hard work, Murray has become the first British player to be the world No 1 in singles without having to hit a ball.
Raonic had felt something in his right quad during his quarter-final victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the previous evening.
World No 4 Raonic, who had lost to Murray in the final of Wimbledon and Queen’s, said:
“So yesterday at I believe 4-2 in the first set I started feeling some pain in my leg. I didn’t think too much of it at that point.
“This morning I had trouble waking up and getting out of bed. So I went to sort of clear any serious diagnosis. Did some tests. Did an MRI half an hour ago, let’s say.
“They found that I have a tear, Grade 1 tear in the right quad. Unfortunately, I’m not able to compete against Andy today in the second semifinal.”
