The former Europa League winners took an early lead when Keidi Bare fired the La Liga side into the lead in the first half, but the Reds drew level late in the game after Divock Origi was brought down inside the box and Roberto Firmino made no mistake striking the ball into the corner of the net.
The game went to penalties but Atletico Madrid kept their nerve to come out on top.
