Tomohiro Nishikado created the arcade game Space Invaders unblocked in 1978. Taito manufactured and distributed it in Japan, while Bally’s Midway business licensed it for international distribution. The first fixed shooter, Space Invaders, established the framework for the shoot ’em up genre. To score as many points as possible, defeat wave after wave of falling aliens with a horizontally moving laser.
Nishikado was inspired by North American target shooting games such as Breakout (1976) and Gun Fight (1975), as well as science fiction storylines such as the novel The War of the Worlds (1897), the anime Space Battleship Yamato (1974), and the film Star Wars (1977). He had to create new hardware and development tools in order to finish the game. Space Invaders was an instant commercial success upon its introduction; by 1982, it had grossed $3.8 billion (equivalent to more than $13 billion adjusted for inflation as of 2016), with a net profit of $450 million (equivalent to $2 billion adjusted for inflation). This made it the best-selling video game of all time, as well as the highest-grossing entertainment product of all time.
