Nipsey Hussle’s sister is requesting legal guardianship of his daughter.
Samantha Smith has filed documents in L.A. County Superior Court asking for guardianship of 10-year-old Emani Asghedom. Sources tell TMZ that Smith believes the child’s biological mother is unable to care for the child.
Nipsey was Emani’s primary caretaker prior to his death outside his Marathon Clothing store last month. Smith says she assisted in caring for Emani throughout her life and wants “to ensure the continued stability for Emani and ensure that she will be able to maintain her current and ongoing relationship” with Nipsey’s family.
On April 2, Smith paid tribute to Nipsey on Instagram and promised to take care of Emani as well as Nipsey’s other family members. “You’ve taught me so much. You hold me down through everything,” she wrote. “I got Lauren. I got Emani. I got Kross. I got Sam, he is my responsibility now. He is my big little brother. I got mommy and Granny and Pop. You gave me so many tools. You gave me so much insight.”
Nipsey also has a second child, 2-year-old Kross, with Lauren London. Kross lives with London and is not the subject of the conservatorship.
Smith and Emani appeared on stage with London and Kross during Nipsey’s memorial service at Staples Center earlier this month. “Thank you for all of the wisdom, knowledge, and love you poured into me,” Smith wrote in tribute to her brother. “I will make you proud and I will keep the Marathon going for you. That’s my word.”
The judge has yet to rule on the guardianship petition.
