Kurt Cobain Death Scene Photos, Cause of Death & Funeral
Who is Kurt Cobain? Kurt Cobain Biography, age
Kurt Cobain’s meteoric fame did, indeed, “burn out.” Cobain was everywhere in the early 1990s, from T-shirts to magazine covers to the top of the Billboard charts. The frontman of Nirvana was on fire.
On April 8, 1994, an electrician discovered his body in his Seattle home, extinguishing the flame. The grunge icon died at the age of 27 from an apparent suicide by gunshot to the head. Nirvana had come to an end.
More than 25 years later, the world hasn’t moved on, particularly since Kurt Cobain’s suicide photos were made public.
Kurt Cobain Cause of Death
In May 2021, more than 27 years after Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s death, the FBI released a 10-page file containing fan letters urging the agency to investigate Cobain’s death as a possible homicide. “We are unable to identify any violation of federal law within the FBI’s investigative jurisdiction,” the FBI concluded, adding that “the majority of homicide/death investigations generally fall within the jurisdiction of state and local authorities.”
The Seattle Police Department, which was in charge of the investigation, did, in fact, re-examine the evidence in the music star’s death investigation back in 2014. The department released a cache of never-before-seen photos from the 1994 death scene during this process. This examination of the evidence, according to police, confirmed Cobain’s death was a suicide.
More images of the shotgun cops say Cobain used to kill himself were released in March 2016.
In this photo, Kurt Cobain’s arm shows his medical bracelet from a drug rehab center in LA that he checked out of days before returning to Seattle, where the Seattle Police Department says, he committed suicide.
So here’s what we see in the new pictures.
1. Kurt’s last smoke was an American Spirit menthol. There’s a box of them on the floor, and a fresh butt on the ground, which appears to have been recently stubbed out.
2. Kurt still wore floppy hunting hats. But this isn’t the one from the oft-seen photo shoot in which he’s wearing white sunglasses and a leopard-print jacket. The ear flaps are shorter, and the shearling lining carries through to the brim.
3. Kurt wanted people to know it was him. He left his wallet near his body. Police were likely the ones who half-slid his ID out of its slot.
4. Kurt still didn’t mind effeminate color. He had a pink lighter.
5. Kurt didn’t always wear cool sunglasses. While he made those bug-eyed white sunglasses famous, he was wearing regular old black shades at the end.
6. Kurt was a junkie. A multi-millionaire could have at least used some fresh towels, but he didn’t care. He kept his rig in a Tom Moore cigar box. The contents include everything you expect from watching Drugstore Cowboy or Requiem for a Dream: blacked-up spoon, Q-tips, fresh syringes, another lighter, cotton balls black with spent smack and what appear to be rolling papers.
Cigarettes and heroin, those were Kurt’s final pleasures — not his guitar or Frances Bean. But that’s to be expected, I suppose. Look at Phil Hoffman: He was just down the street from his family, but escape was all he cared about at that point, whether he meant to end everything or not.

The release of the shotgun photos in 2016 — in response to a public records act request from CBS News — dispels a rumor propagated by conspiracy theorists that the shotgun had been melted down to hide evidence in a supposed police cover-up of a potential murder. However many remain convinced the evidence in the case points to foul play.
This photograph, released on March 17, 2016, shows Seattle Police cold case Detective Michael Ciesynski holding the shotgun police say Kurt Cobain used to kill himself. The shotgun hadn’t been seen before publicly, except for certain crime scene photos that reveal a partial view of the weapon.
