MANILA, Philippines — According to an announcement made by Malacaang on February 24, 2019, Colonel Jesus Durante III of the Philippine Army will take over as the new head of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) after his appointment by President Rodrigo Duterte.
On Tuesday, February 25, a change of command ceremony will take place, which will be presided over by Duterte. Brigadier General Jose Eriel Niembra will be officially replaced by Durante.
The Presidential Security Group (PSG) is the close-in force that is responsible for ensuring the safety of the President, the Vice President, their immediate families, previous Presidents and Vice Presidents, and Heads of State who are in town on official business.
Durante is a native of Davao City and attended the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Tanglaw Diwa Class of 1992. He graduated with the class. He is now serving as the commanding commander of the Presidential Escorts Battalion of the Presidential Security Group.
According to his biography on the website of the Philippine Army, Durante is a “full-blooded Scout Ranger” and “one of the most bemedaled officers in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.” Moreover, the Philippine Army has awarded him a number of medals.
Before joining the PSG, Durante served as the commanding officer of the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion of the 1st Scout Ranger Regiment, which is the Army’s most elite force. This battalion was headquartered on the island of Mindanao.
In 2012, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School in California, which is located in the United States, and got a master’s degree in defense analysis. In addition to that, he has a Master of Science degree in Public Management from the Development Academy of the Philippines with a concentration in Development Security.
In 2007, Durante served as a military observer for the United Nations Mission in Wau, which is located in South Sudan. In 2003, he was honored with the Cavalier Award for Army Operations presented by the PMA Alumni Association.
Niembra, who had been serving as the group commander of the PSG, will soon be promoted to the position of brigade commander in the Army’s 701st Infantry Brigade, which is part of the 7th Infantry Division and is based in Mati, Davao Oriental.
