Although Charlie Battles is best remembered as Reba McEntire’s first husband, he was much more than that, as he exemplified what it meant to be a really American guy. Charlie Battles was a true Southerner at heart, having been born and raised in the South.
Earl and Ocey Battles brought Charlie Battles into the world in Oklahoma in 1945. He was reared in an ordinary family. Charlie Battles, like many other teenagers at the time, answered Uncle Sam’s call and enrolled in the United States Army in 1962. In contrast to many other army members, Charlie Battles was not sent to Vietnam. Instead, he spent 10 months training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Following that, he spent the most of his army service overseas. In Germany, he was an armored intelligence expert. Charlie Battles was honorably discharged in 1965 and returned to Oklahoma. Charlie Battles began steer wrestling once his military duty ended, and he quickly became an expert. He began competing in rodeos all throughout the country and won the championship three years in a row, in 1968, 1970, and 1971. He subsequently displayed his ability by qualifying for the 1974 PRCA National Finals.
Charlie married Sherrie, his first wife, in 1966. Lance and Coty were born from their love, and the Battles family grew from there. Unfortunately, the rodeo was not providing a means of livelihood for Charlie Battles, so he went to work as a cow rancher while still performing in the rodeo.
Reba McEntire, a 21-year-old country music artist, married champion steer wrestler Charlie Battles, 31, on June 21, 1976. Reba was launching her own country music career while also married and adjusting to life as a stepmother. Her song “I Don’t Want to Be a One-Night Stand” peaked at No. 88 on the Billboard country singles charts.
Reba McEntire and the Battles’ boys have very little in common. Charlie also made no effort to build relationships with his two boys and second wife. Reba was estranged from the family since the married couple had no children. It reached to the point that if Reba McEntire asked to do anything with the father and his two boys, Charlie Battles completely ignored her request.
Reba McEntire found solace in her singing, and her husband, Charlie Battles, was a great help. As a result, Reba McEntire made the right decision to go to Tennessee to advance her singing career. Reba McEntire enjoyed Charlie Battle’s protectiveness and support, which rapidly evolved into possessiveness and jealously as her celebrity grew. Because Battles owned their assets, all of Reba’s earnings would go to him. He even stole money from her pocketbook because he felt so deserved of his success.
Reba sought a divorce in 1987, with the assistance of her parents and sister. Charlie had no desire for this divorce, regardless of its motivation, and after discovering that Reba had requested a divorce, he withdrew all of the money from their joint account in an attempt to persuade her to stay.
Charlie Battles immediately climbed to his feet after his divorce from Reba and began his favorite hobby, rodeoing. Near 1993, he purchased his own ranch in Stringtown and began rodeoing there. Charlie also entered the corporate field, maybe as a result of his time with Reba and managing their assets. Charlie Battles subsequently established his own company, Charlie Battles PRCA Rodeo Livestock Company.
Charlie Battles had a new love affair in 1998 and married Donna Granger, who would become his third wife. But they never had children. Charlie Battles tragically died of a stroke in 2006. He was completely paralyzed as a result of that. He died in 2013 as a consequence of stroke and heart failure complications and was buried at Sulphur, Louisiana.
