The first lesson we are taught when we start earning is to ‘save’, and the best way to practice it is to shop in ‘bulk’.
Well, this is one side of the story. The other side says that buying in bulk is a bad practice.
According to various food researchers, there are certain food items that lose their nutritional value if not consumed in time.
Also, it has nothing to do with concepts like ‘date of expiry’ and ‘best before’. Scroll through to know the food items you should never buy in bulk and why.
1. Fruits and veggies
If you think buying fruits and veggies in bulk makes your life easy throughout the week, you need to think again. According to health experts, bulk buying is not a healthy habit. Most of the items get stale with time and with every passing day the nutritional value of the items keep diminishing.
2. Eggs
According to a report by the American Egg Board, raw eggs can last up to 3 weeks from the date of purchase (if kept in the refrigerator). So, if you are an occasional eggitarian, think before buying eggs.
3. Ground spices
They don’t expire, but yes, they lose their efficiency (in terms of adding flavour to the food) with time. So, the best way to avoid the loss is to buy spices in small portions.
4. Cooking oils
Have you ever stored cooking oils in the refrigerator? According to a study, storing oils in the fridge can help preserve them for a longer time. However, health experts feel that one shouldn’t buy cooking oils in bulk, as they lose their nutrients with time.
5. Whole grains and nuts
Did you know that whole grains and nuts have higher oil concentration? If not, please note and make sure that you never buy them in bulk, as like cooking oils, they can also go rancid with time.
6. Condiments
Generally, condiments like mayonnaise, ketchup, and dip have a longer shelf life, but that never means they are there forever. So, buying in bulk is a bad idea.
7. Coffee
Fresh coffee is the secret to good coffee. Yes, you read it right. So, stop practicing the habit of buying coffee in bulk and start brewing your own coffee every day.
8. Bread and bakery
Bakery shops have something magical that tempts us to buy ‘extras’ and then we regret as their shelf life is small. The idea behind restricting yourself from buying bakery products in bulk is to say No to health hazards.
