Melinda Gates has opened up about her 25-year marriage to her husband, Bill, revealing that one of the secrets to everlasting love with a tech titan is patience.
The 54-year-old philanthropist, who is promoting her new book, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, couldn’t help but laugh when she was congratulated on their recent milestone anniversary during her interview with The Sunday Times.
‘I think I laugh because, I mean, it’s funny, we’ve just gotten to a point in life where Bill and I can both laugh about more things,’ she explained. ‘And, believe me, I can remember some days that were so incredibly hard in our marriage where you thought, “Can I do this?”‘She recalled being furious with her husband years ago because he was reading a book about Winston Churchill instead of helping her pack up the car and get their children ready.
Although Melinda credited patience with helping her stay married to a work-obsessed entrepreneur, she said he is actually pretty easy to live with most of the time.
‘He needs a little training, and he’d tell you that too,’ she added, noting that she was the one who helped him find a work-life balance.
‘When he was having trouble making the decision about getting married, he was incredibly clear that it was not about me, it was about “Can I get the balance right between work and family life?”‘ she explained.
In her book, Melinda gives readers a rare glimpse into her personal life, recalling how she met the man who would one day become her husband when she started her job at Microsoft. Interesting book, it must be!
