The National Assembly has approved the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) to strengthen security in the country.
The approval followed the passage of the bill, tagged ” Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) Bill, 2016 (SB. 173 & SB 183) at the Senate Thursday.
Daily Trust recalled that the House of Representatives had in June, this year passed the bill.
Presenting the report on the bill, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Bayero Usman Nafada (APC, Gombe) said when established the Corps would be domiciled in Ministry of Interior.
The Corps when established would facilitate peace, community services, Nation-building among others.
When the Senate President, Bukola Saraki raised question for the passage of the bill, Senators voted in its support.
In his remark, Saraki said the passage of the bill would institutionalize the Peace Corps that has been going for years.
Saraki has also constituted a conference committee to harmonise the version passed by the House with that Senate.
At the end, the harmonized version would be sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.
